Pedernales Falls State Park had been on our family's Texas bucket list for a while. It's one of the most popular Texas State Parks, known for its limestone falls, scenic Hill Country views, hiking trails, swimming, and camping. During our visit, we spent the afternoon swimming in the designated swimming area, explored the falls around sunset, and camped overnight at an electric campsite.

Here's what we learned from our trip and what to expect.

Watch Our Visit:

Visiting Pedernales Falls

Family exploring Pedernales Falls during sunset at Pedernales Falls State Park.

The falls are what made us want to visit Pedernales Falls State Park, and they definitely didn't disappoint. The wide limestone rocks and flowing river make for some beautiful views.

After spending a few hours swimming, we headed over to the falls that evening. The cooler weather and fewer people made it a great time to visit the falls. Watching the sunset over the river was a beautiful way to end the day.

Getting to the falls requires a short hike from the parking area to the falls overlook, followed by a flight of stairs down to the falls. We didn't have any trouble with the walk, but it's something to keep in mind if you're traveling with young kids, using a stroller, or traveling with someone who has difficulty with stairs.

If you're thinking about visiting around sunset too, we'd definitely recommend bringing a flashlight. It was getting pretty dark by the time we walked back to the parking area.

Swimming at Pedernales Falls State Park

One thing that's helpful to know before you visit is that swimming is not allowed at Pedernales Falls itself. The park has a designated swimming area a short drive away from the falls along the Pedernales River.

If you'd like a better idea of where the designated swimming area is located, you can view the official Pedernales Falls State Park map from Texas Parks & Wildlife.

Getting to the swimming area requires a short hike from the parking lot, including a flight of stairs. We didn't have any trouble with the walk, but it's something to keep in mind if you're traveling with young kids, using a stroller, or traveling with someone who has difficulty with stairs.

We spent a few hours relaxing by the water and swimming in the designated swimming area. The kids had such a fun time walking upstream and then floating back down. It was a great place to cool off and spend the afternoon before we headed over to the falls later that evening as the weather started to cool down.

When we visited, the river's current was fairly strong in some spots, and some of the rocks were slippery. Before getting in the water, be sure to check the current river conditions and follow any posted park advisories.

Camping at Pedernales Falls State Park

Electric Campsite #009 at Pedernales Falls State Park.

For this trip, we stayed at Electric Campsite #009.

The campsite was spacious and felt fairly private, with plenty of room to spread out. There was a parking pad next to the electric hookup, along with a couple of different spots where you could set up a traditional tent.

The campsite also included a picnic table with a shade cover, plus a fire ring with a grill grate for campfire cooking.

If you're planning to camp here, we'd recommend reserving your campsite well in advance, especially during spring, summer, and holiday weekends.

What Should You Do at Pedernales Falls State Park?

If you want to swim:

Head to the designated swimming area. We spent a few hours here, and the kids had such a fun time walking upstream and floating back down.

If you're visiting the falls:

Consider going in the evening if your schedule allows. We enjoyed the cooler weather, fewer people, and watching the sunset over the river.

If you're planning to camp:

Reserve your campsite early, especially during busy seasons. We stayed at Electric Campsite #009 and found it to be spacious and fairly private.

If you enjoy spotting wildlife:

Keep an eye out while walking around the park. During our evening visit to the falls, we spotted a deer, a rabbit, and even a tiny baby snake.

Tips for Visiting

  • Reserve your day pass or campsite early, especially during spring, summer, and holiday weekends.

  • Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes, especially if you're visiting during the warmer months.

  • Consider bringing water shoes if you plan to spend time in the river. My husband found they helped him navigate the rocky riverbed, while I actually felt more stable barefoot. It really came down to personal preference.

  • If you're planning to visit the falls around sunset, don't forget to bring a flashlight for the walk back to the parking lot.

  • We encountered quite a few bugs during our visit, including flies and fire ants. Running our portable fan while we ate at the campsite helped keep the flies away.

  • Before getting in the water, always check the current river conditions and follow any posted park advisories.
