Planning Your Trip

Our Family's Top Picks From Each Category

After visiting destinations across the United States, these are our family's top picks from each vacation category. While every destination on this list offers something special, these are the vacations that stood out most to us.

  • Best Theme Park Vacation: LEGOLAND California Resort

While both LEGOLAND resorts are fantastic for families, LEGOLAND California gets a slight edge from our family. We loved the overall atmosphere, the outdoor play area at the Castle Hotel, and the Southern California location. Between the theme park, water park, hotel amenities, nearby beaches, and attractions around San Diego, it felt like a complete family vacation experience.

  • Best Beach Vacation: Destin, Florida

The white sand beaches, clear water, and family-friendly atmosphere keep us coming back year after year.

  • Best National Park Vacation: Yellowstone National Park

Wildlife, waterfalls, geothermal features, and incredible scenery make Yellowstone one of the most memorable family vacations we've taken.

  • Best Family Resort Getaway: Kalahari Resort Round Rock

When we're looking for built-in family fun, Kalahari delivers with its indoor and outdoor water parks, family activities, restaurants, and entertainment.

  • Best Unique Family Vacation: Leavenworth, Washington

This charming Bavarian-themed town feels unlike anywhere else we've visited in the United States.

Looking for more inspiration? Below are 25 family vacation ideas we've personally visited across the United States.

Theme Park Resort Vacation Ideas

For families looking for rides, attractions, and built-in fun, theme park vacations can be hard to beat. These destinations combine exciting attractions, themed hotels, and family-friendly experiences into one memorable trip.

1. LEGOLAND California Resort

Why we love it: We had such a fun time visiting LEGOLAND California, exploring the SEA LIFE Aquarium, checking out the water park, and staying at the Castle Hotel. We loved the Castle Hotel's outdoor play area and evening movie projector, which gave the resort a fun family atmosphere even after leaving the park. The hotel lobby also features a castle staircase with a built-in slide that our kids enjoyed. Another perk was that breakfast was included with our stay. Between the theme park, water park, hotel amenities, and nearby Southern California attractions, it felt like a complete family vacation experience.

Best for: LEGO fans, younger kids, and family theme park vacations.

Where we stayed: LEGOLAND® Castle Hotel

2. LEGOLAND Florida Resort

Why we love it: LEGOLAND Florida is such a fun destination for LEGO fans and families with younger kids. The rides are exciting without feeling too intense, and the resort is large enough that you can easily spend multiple days exploring the theme park, water park, and hotel amenities.

We loved staying at the Pirate Island Hotel and how close it is to the theme park, making it easy to walk back and forth throughout the day. The hotel offers themed rooms, restaurants, and play areas that continue the LEGO experience even after leaving the park. While it was a bit too chilly for us to swim during our February visit, the hotel pool looked like it would be a lot of fun during the warmer months.

Best for: LEGO fans, younger kids, and multi-day family theme park vacations.

Watch our visit:

3. Disneyland Resort, CA

Why we love it: Disneyland is an iconic family vacation destination that we feel should be experienced at least once. Watching the kids experience their favorite characters, rides, and themed lands for the first time is a heartwarming experience. There is so much to explore, and we had a great time riding attractions, soaking in the beautifully crafted scenes, browsing the shops, and seeing characters throughout the park. The Disney magic and attention to detail make it a memorable destination for families of all ages.

Best for: Disney lovers and theme park fans.

Family Resort & Water Park Vacation Ideas

Sometimes the destination is the resort itself. These family-friendly resorts offer pools, water parks, activities, dining, and plenty of ways to keep both kids and adults entertained without ever leaving the property.

4. Kalahari Resort Round Rock, TX

Why we love it: Kalahari feels a bit upscale while still being incredibly family-friendly. The décor and animal statues throughout the resort are impressive, and the variety of shops gives the property a mall-like feel—in a good way. We found the rooms to be clean and comfortable, and we loved spending time at both the indoor and outdoor water parks, exploring Tom Foolerys Adventure Park, and checking out the many restaurants and shops.

With its indoor water park and abundance of on-site activities, Kalahari is a destination that can be enjoyed year-round. For adults, there are also areas such as the Grotto Swim-Up Bar and Redd's Piano Bar & Lounge, making it appealing for couples' getaways as well.

Best for: Water park lovers, family weekends, and year-round fun.

Watch our visit:

5. JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, TX

Why we love it: The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa has an upscale feel while still maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere. The lobby is beautiful, with multiple dining options and scenic Hill Country views. We absolutely loved the outdoor water park area, which includes a lazy river, pools, and water slides that are thoughtfully designed to complement the natural Hill Country landscape. The way the resort blends luxury amenities with the surrounding scenery makes it feel both relaxing and unique.

Best for: Resort vacations, pools, lazy rivers, family relaxation, and special occasions.

6. The Springs Resort and Spa, CO

Why we love it: The Springs Resort & Spa is such a unique vacation experience. We loved exploring the different soaking pools,  each with its own temperature and scenery, all fed by the Mother Spring, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's deepest geothermal hot spring. The mineral-rich waters are believed by many to have healing properties, adding another unique element to the experience.

One of our favorite perks was the 24-hour access to the soaking pools included with an overnight stay. There was something special about relaxing in the hot springs under a star-filled sky and then returning again early the next morning. The resort offers both family-friendly pools and adult-only areas, making it a great choice for a variety of travelers.

Best for: Hot springs, mountain scenery, relaxation, and family wellness getaways.

7. Great Wolf Lodge (Various Locations)

Why we love it: Visiting Great Wolf Lodge has been such a fun experience for our family. Our kids love staying in the themed cabin rooms with a separate bunkhouse area just for kids, playing at the water park, and participating in the family-friendly activities throughout the resort.

Most hotels are designed with adults in mind—you try to be quiet in the lobby, avoid being too silly, and keep the noise down. At Great Wolf Lodge, it's the opposite. Kids are encouraged to have fun with dance parties, story times, and interactive MagiQuest adventures throughout the resort, making it a refreshing experience when traveling as a family. The temperature-controlled indoor water park also makes it a great year-round getaway.

Best for: Younger kids, indoor water parks, weekend trips, and family entertainment.

Family Beach Vacation Ideas

Whether you're building sandcastles, swimming, or simply relaxing by the water, beach vacations remain a classic family getaway. These destinations offer everything from white-sand beaches and oceanfront escapes to beautiful lakeside adventures.

8. Destin, FL

Why we love it: Destin, Florida is one of our favorite beach destinations. The incredibly clean white sand and clear emerald-green water are hard to beat. Relaxing on the beach, swimming in the Gulf, and taking in a beautiful sunset are must-do experiences if you ask us.

There is also an abundance of family-friendly restaurants and activities throughout the area. Over the years, we've taken dolphin cruises, rented a pontoon boat, visited the pier, and even enjoyed trips where we did nothing more than relax on the beach. Every visit has been memorable and keeps us wanting to come back again and again.

During the summer months, the warm water temperatures make Destin a popular choice for visitors, so it can get quite busy. We've also had fantastic experiences visiting during the winter, when crowds are smaller, lodging prices are lower, and temperatures are cooler.

Best for: White-sand beaches, swimming in clear ocean water, family fun at the beach, restaurants, dolphin cruises, boating, pier walks, and connecting with nature.

Watch our Sunset Dolphin Cruise Experience:

9. Atlantic Beach, FL

Why we love it: When we visited Atlantic Beach during the summer, it had a very mellow and low-key feel. The kids had fun playing in both the sand and water, and we loved being able to enjoy the beach without the large crowds often found at more popular beach destinations. There were also plenty of cute shops and restaurants within walking distance of the beach, making it easy to explore the area during our stay.

Best for: Low-key beach trips, relaxing stays, walkable beach towns, and connecting with nature.

10. South Padre Island, TX

Why we love it: South Padre Island has such a fun classic beach vibe. We love getting fresh seafood, enjoying the ice cream and candy shops, browsing the cute surf-style stores, and of course spending time on the beach. The island feels relaxed and family-friendly, making it an easy place to slow down and enjoy time together by the Gulf.

Best for: Beach vacations, seafood lovers, family fun, and relaxing by the Gulf.

Where we stayed: Beachfront Condo (VRBO)

Watch our visit:

11. South Lake Tahoe, CA & NV

Why we love it: We loved the combination of walkability to restaurants and shops along with scenic outdoor hikes and, of course, relaxing by beautiful Lake Tahoe. We stayed at Marriott's Timber Lodge and found it to be a fantastic location. The property has its own outdoor pool area, gate access directly to the shops at Heavenly Village, walking distance to Van Sickle Bi-State Park, and is just a short drive from popular South Lake Tahoe beaches.

During our trip, we enjoyed soaking in the lake views from Nevada Beach. The crystal-clear water surrounded by mountains creates a stunning setting, and it's easy to see why so many families return year after year.

Best for: Lake activities, hiking, mountain scenery, and outdoor adventures.

Where we stayed: Marriott's Timber Lodge

National & State Park Family Vacation Ideas

For families looking to reconnect with nature, explore scenic landscapes, and enjoy some of America's most beautiful outdoor destinations, national and state parks offer unforgettable family adventures. From iconic national parks to relaxing state parks, these trips provide plenty of opportunities to get outside and make lasting memories together.

12. Yellowstone National Park, WY

Why we love it: Yellowstone is such a unique place where you can experience geothermal activity, waterfalls, and incredible wildlife all in one destination. We visited shortly after the park opened for the season, and while not all of the roads were open and hotels and restaurants remained closed, we still had a fantastic experience. Watching Old Faithful erupt as light snow fell around us was such a memorable experience.

We did a lot of driving between stops, but many of the major attractions were easy to access from nearby parking areas. During our visit, we saw numerous animals, including a bear and several bison. The crowds were very mellow during our trip, which allowed us to take our time exploring and enjoying the scenery.

Best for: Nature lovers, wildlife viewing, waterfalls, hiking, camping, and unforgettable outdoor adventures.

Watch our visit:

13. Yosemite National Park, CA

Why we love it: Yosemite National Park has some of the most stunning scenery we've experienced. We visited during the winter when the park was covered in snow and visitors were required to carry tire chains, even when traveling in a 4x4 vehicle. The massive trees blanketed in snow looked like something straight out of a storybook.

We enjoyed spending time walking in the snow and soaking in the incredible views. Due to the winter weather, we spent much of our visit driving between scenic areas, but the experience only made us want to return and explore more of the park during the warmer months.

Best for: Scenic landscapes, hiking, camping, photography, and connecting with nature.

14. Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

Why we love it: The Grand Canyon is one of those iconic U.S. destinations that we feel everyone should visit at least once. Seeing the canyon in person helps you appreciate just how massive it really is. We enjoyed taking in the views and exploring the park during our visit. The park also has a nice camping area and a convenient camp store, making it easy to stay within the park without having to leave for supplies.

Best for: Nature lovers, iconic U.S. destinations, camping, hiking, scenic viewpoints, and family adventures.

15. Guadalupe River State Park, TX

Why we love it: We absolutely loved relaxing by the river at Guadalupe River State Park. During our visit, the water was cool and refreshing, with shallow areas that were perfect for splashing around as a family. The gradual beach entry and low water depth worked especially well for our kids. The rocky cliffs along the river create a unique and beautiful Texas Hill Country setting.

There were plenty of picnic tables and BBQ grills available throughout the day-use area, making it a great spot for a family outing. We didn't notice a traditional park store during our camping stay, but there are grocery stores about 20 minutes away if you need to pick up supplies.

Best for: River swimming, fishing, picnicking, connecting with nature, and enjoying Texas Hill Country scenery.

Where we stayed: Campsite 051 Turkey Sink

Watch our visit:

16. Garner State Park, TX

Why we love it: We loved visiting and camping at Garner State Park. Staying in the Pecan Grove Camping Area allowed us to easily walk to the river, camp store, and hiking trails, making it easy to enjoy everything the park has to offer. The hiking trails were some of the more challenging trails we've experienced in Texas, making them a great option for families looking for a bit of adventure. The river is surrounded by beautiful cypress trees, creating a scenic setting for swimming and relaxing. Cooling off in the Frio River while taking in views of Old Baldy was one of our favorite parts of the trip.

Best for: Hill Country views, hiking, river swimming, connecting with nature, and camping.

Where we stayed: Pecan Grove Camping Area, Site 80

Watch our visit:

17. Blue Spring State Park, FL

Why we love it: We had been wanting to see manatees for quite some time and had previously visited another Florida state park without any luck. After reading many reviews saying Blue Spring State Park was the place to go, we decided to visit—and they weren't wrong! We were excited to see many manatees during our visit, along with a snake in the water and an owl along the boardwalk.

The boardwalk and walking trails throughout the park were very nice, and the spring looked like it would be fantastic for swimming when not in manatee season. We had reserved a campsite but were unfortunately rained out and didn't end up staying overnight. However, the campsite looked very nice, and we'd love to return in the future.

Best for: Manatee viewing (in season), spring swimming (in season), nature walks, and camping.

Watch our visit:

Mountain & Desert Family Vacation Ideas

Mountain towns, scenic drives, red rock landscapes, and desert adventures can make for unforgettable family vacations. These destinations combine outdoor adventure with unique scenery and plenty of opportunities to slow down and explore.

18. Moab, UT

Why we love it: Moab has an energetic outdoor atmosphere that makes you want to get out and explore. There are cute shops, great restaurants, and incredible scenery throughout the area. During our visit, we spent two days exploring Arches National Park and had a fantastic time discovering the unique rock formations and desert landscapes.

One thing we really enjoyed about Moab was that the adventure doesn't stop at the national parks. Even while leaving town, we were able to pull over and hike to a giant arch on nearby BLM land, which was a fun and memorable surprise. There always seemed to be another trail, viewpoint, or outdoor activity waiting to be explored.

Best for: Desert adventures, scenic drives, hiking, national parks, and unique landscapes.

Watch our visit:

19. Sedona, AZ

Why we love it: Sedona is incredibly beautiful and offers a great mix of outdoor adventure and upscale amenities. The red rock scenery is stunning, and there are numerous hiking trails to explore throughout the area. Many people also believe Sedona's famous vortexes offer healing energy, which adds another unique element to the experience.

We love being able to spend the day hiking and then head into town to enjoy the shops and restaurants. We've visited Sedona many times over the years and always enjoy finding a way to include it in our travel plans.

Best for: Scenic views, hiking, restaurants, upscale shops, camping, and unique desert landscapes.

Watch our Boynton Canyon Trail hike:

20. Breckenridge, CO

Why we love it: Breckenridge is such a cute mountain town with an adorable historic Main Street. We enjoyed being able to walk from our hotel to restaurants, shops, and local attractions while taking in the mountain scenery. There is a fun train-themed playground in town, and we enjoyed the easy Trollstigen Trail hike to see a giant wooden troll. We visited in June and were even able to see snow along our drive out of town, which was a lot of fun for our family.

Best for: Walkable mountain towns, historic downtowns, mountain scenery, family-friendly attractions, and easy hiking.

Watch our visit:

21. Avon, CO

Why we love it: Avon offers a beautiful, peaceful, and laid-back mountain getaway. We enjoyed strolling along the creek, relaxing at the local park, and taking in the surrounding mountain scenery. We found it to be a great place to slow down, recharge, and enjoy the outdoors at a more relaxed pace.

Best for: Relaxed mountain getaways, scenic walks, mountain views, and connecting with nature.

22. Santa Fe, NM

Why we love it: We enjoyed exploring downtown Santa Fe, browsing the shops, trying local restaurants, and taking in the beautiful Pueblo-style architecture throughout the city. We also spent time at Cathedral Park and Santa Fe Plaza, both of which were great places to stroll, relax, and soak in the character of the area.

Best for: Pueblo-style architecture, shopping, dining, and walkable downtown areas.

Unique Family Vacation Ideas

Looking for something a little different? These destinations step away from the traditional beach, resort, or theme park vacation and offer unique family experiences.

23. Glen Eyrie Castle, CO

Why we love it:  From the moment we arrived at the gates of Glen Eyrie Castle, we were impressed. The natural landscape surrounding the castle is stunning, with a mix of lush greenery and massive red rock formations. During our stay, we spotted turkeys, deer, and bighorn sheep throughout the grounds. The property also features a beautiful rose garden and hiking trails that lead directly into the surrounding red rock scenery.

We stayed in the Big Horn Lodge, which was just a short walk from the castle. Guests with smaller parties can book a stay inside the castle itself. Breakfast is included with an overnight stay, and walking through the castle before enjoying breakfast on the scenic patio made the experience even more memorable. If you're planning a visit, keep in mind that Glen Eyrie is a Christ-centered, alcohol-free, and marijuana-free property.

Best for: Unique stays, history, mountain scenery, hiking, and quiet getaways.

Where we stayed: Big Horn Lodge

Watch our visit:

24. Leavenworth, WA

Why we love it: We love visiting themed destinations, so naturally we enjoyed visiting Leavenworth, a charming Bavarian-themed town tucked away in the mountains of Washington. We enjoyed strolling through town, browsing the unique shops, picking up souvenirs, and taking in the Bavarian-inspired architecture. We visited during the summer, but it was easy to see why it's such a popular destination during the holiday season, with attractions like the year-round Christmas store and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Best for: Unique destinations, themed towns, shopping, dining, mountain scenery, and holiday lovers.

Watch our visit:

25. Poulsbo, WA

Why we love it: Poulsbo is such a charming place to visit. We loved the "Little Norway" atmosphere and beautiful waterfront setting. During our visit, there was live music playing in multiple areas near Main Street, and we enjoyed exploring the local shops. We spent much of our time soaking in the Liberty Bay views from Historic Downtown and Liberty Bay Waterfront Park.

Best for: Waterfront strolls, charming downtowns, shopping, dining, and relaxing by the bay.
