We visited Grand Teton National Park on April 26, 2025.
When we headed out on our road trip from Houston, Texas, we had originally envisioned sunny skies and a relaxing day near Jenny Lake. After seeing so many stunning photos of the lake, it was at the top of our list!
But being from Texas, we were in for quite a surprise—most of the area was still covered in snow, and much of the park was just beginning to reopen for the season.
We started our day at the Moose Entrance (paid entry) and saw a sign that said Jenny Lake was 8 miles away—but the road was closed at the 3-mile mark. Part of us hoped it was just an old sign someone forgot to take down, but… it was true. The road to Jenny Lake was closed.
There were a lot of people parked with bikes, so it looked like biking to the lake might’ve been an option—but we decided to head back out and try another entrance instead.
We stopped at the Teton Point Turnout, which had a parking lot and a stunning view of the Grand Teton Range. This stop is outside the paid gates, so it was free to visit!
Next, we entered the park through the Moran Entrance. No one was at the gate when we arrived, and all services on this side of the park appeared to be closed—including bathrooms and trash cans.
Still hoping to enjoy some lakeside views, we continued on to Colter Bay Village, but everything was closed—and to our surprise, the lake was completely frozen! ❄️ We still had fun here—parking, throwing a few snowballs, and stretching our legs with a walk down the boat launch to get a closer look at the frozen water.
We continued on to see the Jackson Lake Dam, soaking in the snowy mountain scenery. We didn’t see any animals in the park that day other than a few birds, and since we weren’t able to access any of the usual services, we wouldn’t recommend visiting Grand Teton this early in the season.
That said, we were still happy to take in the beauty of the Tetons while we were nearby. If we visit again, we’ll definitely plan for the summer season!
After exiting the park, we stopped by the National Elk Refuge & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center. This was a great way to warm up and learn more about the local wildlife. We ended our day exploring Jackson, Wyoming, and stopping by Jackson Town Square.
