We’ve visited Galveston many times over the years, and there are tons of great family-friendly attractions to choose from. But for this itinerary, we’re taking you a little off the beaten path with a mix of places our family has really enjoyed.
From exploring historic ships and finding a fun playground to eating fresh seafood, riding the free ferry, and ending the day with a sunset by the beach, this itinerary gives you a little bit of everything.

Start the Day at MOD Coffeehouse
First things first: grab a coffee (or other beverage!) and a snack to gear up for the day!
Located in downtown Galveston, MOD Coffeehouse has such a fun, laid-back coffee shop vibe. We love grabbing a spot in their outdoor seating area to enjoy our drinks and treats before heading out for the day.
Of course, there’s coffee for the grown-ups, but they also have great smoothies and tasty baked goods and treats, so there’s plenty for the kids to enjoy too.

Family Traveling USA Tip: Get an earlier start if you plan to fit in the entire itinerary. There’s plenty of time to enjoy the stops, but you don’t want to feel rushed as you get closer to sunset.
Explore the Galveston Naval Museum
Next up is one of the coolest historical attractions we’ve visited in Galveston: the Galveston Naval Museum.
The museum is home to two historic World War II vessels, the USS Cavalla submarine and USS Stewart destroyer escort. Rather than simply viewing them from a distance, you can actually climb aboard and explore them!
Our kids had a blast making their way through the vessels, squeezing through the submarine, and seeing what life would have been like for the sailors who served aboard them.
It’s a fun way for kids to experience history rather than just read about it, and getting to explore both vessels made the experience even more memorable for our family.

Family Traveling USA Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for stairs, ladders, and tight spaces aboard the vessels. The submarine can be a bit of a squeeze!
Visit Seawolf Park
When visiting the Galveston Naval Museum, you’ll already be parked at Seawolf Park, so we think it’s a natural next stop! Let the kids get some extra wiggles out at the playground while watching ships and other vessels pass by on the water before heading off for lunch.
Our youngest really enjoyed the playground, and it was a nice way to break up the sightseeing with some good old-fashioned playtime. Plus, you’re already there, so there’s no need to make another trek across the island!
Seawolf Park is also a popular spot for fishing and has a fishing pier and picnic areas if you want to spend more time here. Different per-person rates apply if you plan to fish, so check the current pricing before your visit.

Grub at Katie’s Seafood House
After a morning of exploring, it’s time for some grub!
Katie’s Seafood House is a great lunch stop if you’re looking for fresh Gulf seafood while visiting Galveston.
One of the things we love about Katie’s is just how fresh the seafood is! Their fish come straight from the Gulf, and you really can’t beat enjoying fresh seafood with a waterfront view while you’re in Galveston.
We really enjoyed our meal here as a family, and there are choices for the kids as well.
Fuel up because there are still a couple of fun adventures ahead!

Enjoy a Free Ride on the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry
Next up is one of our favorite free things to do in Galveston: riding the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry!
The ferry connects Galveston Island with the Bolivar Peninsula, and it’s completely free to ride. You can bring your vehicle aboard or park on the Galveston side and walk onto the ferry.
For this one-day Galveston itinerary, walking aboard is an easy way to enjoy the ferry ride over and back without taking your vehicle across to Bolivar.
And make sure you keep an eye on the water!
We’ve spotted dolphins during our ferry rides, which makes an already fun free activity even better. Of course, dolphin sightings are never guaranteed, but looking for them is part of the fun.
Between the Gulf views, passing ships, birds, and the possibility of spotting dolphins, there is plenty for the whole family to see along the way.

Wrap Up the Day at Galveston Island State Park
After a full day of exploring, Galveston Island State Park was the perfect place to slow down and wrap up our day.
We brought our chairs and some snacks down to the beach, found a peaceful spot, and settled in to enjoy the views and watch the sunset.
Compared with some of Galveston’s busier beach areas, the state park had a quieter, more natural feel that we really enjoyed. It was a relaxing change of pace after a day filled with sightseeing and activities.
If you time your visit around sunset, it’s such a nice way to end a family day trip to Galveston.

You could easily spend an entire weekend or longer exploring Galveston because there are so many things to do in Galveston with kids. But if one day is all you have, you can absolutely have a fun family adventure!
