We recently visited Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado—and it was such a unique experience! From fascinating cliff dwellings to surprise wildlife sightings, it turned out to be such a memorable stop on our road trip.
If you’re planning a family visit or just love exploring national parks, here’s a look at what we experienced in Mesa Verde with our kids!
🐎 Wild Horses in the Park
One of the biggest surprises of our visit? We spotted wild horses roaming freely near the roadway! Seeing them in person was such a magical moment. We pulled over safely to watch from a distance—an unforgettable sight, especially for the kids.
Mesa Verde is known more for its archeological history than its wildlife, so we felt incredibly lucky to catch a glimpse of these beautiful animals. It added a whole new layer of excitement to our visit!
🏛️ Visiting Cliff Palace
Our main goal for the day was to see the famous Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The overlook provided incredible views of this ancient village, which was built directly into the side of a canyon wall by the Ancestral Puebloans.
We weren’t able to do a ranger-led tour this time (those are seasonal and often require reservations), but even just seeing the structure from above and reading the interpretive signs gave us a great sense of the history and ingenuity of the people who once lived there.
The kids were fascinated, and we had some great conversations about how people lived without modern conveniences—and how they built homes inside cliffs!
🚗 Driving Through the Park
Mesa Verde is a park with a lot of scenic driving—winding roads, mountain views, and multiple pull-offs. There was a gift shop open during our visit, but we definitely recommend bringing snacks and water!
Some services were limited during our visit, so be sure to check park alerts before you go. And don’t forget to fill up on gas before heading in—there’s a lot of road to cover!
👨👩👧👦 Tips for Visiting Mesa Verde with Kids
Bring binoculars – You never know what wildlife you’ll spot (wild horses, anyone?).
Start early – There’s a lot of driving in the park and limited shade at many overlooks.
Check tour schedules – If you want to go into Cliff Palace or other dwellings, look up seasonal ranger-led tours in advance.
Pack layers – Even in warmer seasons, it can get breezy at the higher elevations.
