Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go trick-or-treating at the zoo? The San Antonio Zoo BOO 2025 event is back, and it’s one of the best family-friendly Halloween events in San Antonio. We visited on opening day (September 20, 2025), and it was the perfect way to kick off the spooky season with our family of five.
Whether you’re local to San Antonio or planning a fall family trip, here’s everything you need to know about Zoo BOO 2025 — plus our honest review and tips to make the most of your visit.
👻 What Is San Antonio Zoo BOO?
Zoo BOO is the San Antonio Zoo’s annual Halloween celebration designed for kids and families. The zoo transforms into a festive wonderland with:
🍬 A Trick-or-treat trail

🦁 Sightings of your favorite zoo animals
🎶 Seasonal entertainment and activities
It’s a safe, fun way to celebrate Halloween while still learning about wildlife and conservation.

🐯 Highlights From Our Visit
Our family loved exploring the zoo and trick-or-treating along the candy stations. The decorations were festive but not too spooky, making it perfect for little ones.
Some of our favorite moments included:
Trick-or-treating on the candy trail
Watching the animals in their habitats surrounded by Halloween decor
Taking family photos at the themed backdrops
👨👩👧👦 Tips for Families Visiting Zoo BOO
If you’re planning your trip, here are some parent-approved tips from our visit:
🎭 Wear costumes — We skipped it this time since it was early in the season (and HOT!), but lightweight costumes make trick-or-treating extra fun.
⏰ Trick-or-Treating runs from 4–5 PM — We arrived an hour early and the stations weren’t open yet. If candy is a priority, plan your visit for later in the day!
(Extended hours and special activities on Halloween night.)
👜 Bring a bag for candy — We picked up complimentary bags from a gift shop near the hippo exhibit. Handy to have if your kids collect a lot of treats!
💧 Stay hydrated — It’s still warm in San Antonio in September and October. There’s a water fountain with a bottle refill station at the Discovery PLAYce near the candy trail.
📸 Take advantage of photo spots — There are plenty of fun themed backdrops for family memories.

❓ Is San Antonio Zoo BOO Worth It?
In our opinion — absolutely! Zoo Boo is included with regular San Antonio Zoo admission or your zoo membership — no extra ticket is required. We loved that it felt like a bonus experience on top of the usual zoo visit. If you’re looking for Halloween events in San Antonio for kids, Zoo BOO is one of the best. It combines everything families love: candy, costumes, animals, and safe trick-or-treating.
