Kemah Boardwalk is a popular New Year’s Eve spot in the Greater Houston area. With free entry, a lively atmosphere, and an early fireworks show, it’s a good option for families who want to get out and celebrate without staying up too late.
Arriving at Kemah Boardwalk on New Year’s Eve
We arrived at Kemah Boardwalk around 6:30 PM. There was a line to enter the parking garage, but we were able to go straight into the parking lot right next to the boardwalk and snag a spot.
For New Year’s Eve, parking near the boardwalk was $25 for the evening (special event pricing). Parking close was very convenient, especially with kids. The event was popular, and many people (including us) left right after the fireworks, so there was some traffic getting out — be prepared to pack a little patience.
Exploring the Boardwalk Before the Fireworks

Before the fireworks began, we spent time walking around the boardwalk, taking in the lights, rides, and overall atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants and food stands if you’re looking to grab a bite.
We enjoyed listening to the live music and soaking in the nighttime views of Galveston Bay. As it got closer to 9:00 PM (fireworks show time), the crowds did start to pick up. We’d suggest getting food and choosing a good spot to watch the show a decent amount of time beforehand.
Fireworks at 9:00 PM (Perfect for Families)

One of the biggest highlights of New Year’s Eve at Kemah Boardwalk is the fireworks show at 9:00 PM. This earlier time makes it a great option for families who want to celebrate without keeping kids up until midnight.
We watched the full fireworks show from near the Ferris wheel, looking out over the water, which offered a great view. It was very busy — be prepared to be a little snuggled in if you’re trying to get an up-close viewing spot. We thought it was a fantastic fireworks show, and it lasted roughly 15 minutes.
