🌼 A Beautiful New Tradition at the Houston Zoo
This year, the Houston Zoo hosted its first-ever Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, and it was a colorful and meaningful experience for families across Houston.
The event honored loved ones through art, light, and cultural traditions, filling the zoo with glowing sugar skulls, bright floral arches, and papel picado (decorative paper banners) that celebrated life and remembrance.
🕯️ Culture, Community, and Connection
We visited after dark, where guests could walk through the glowing Zoo Boo decorations, admire the illuminated Día de los Muertos arch, and enjoy colorful displays throughout the zoo. The nighttime atmosphere added an extra touch of magic to the celebration, making it both peaceful and vibrant.
A community altar was also on display, created to remember and celebrate those who have passed. Out of privacy and respect, we didn’t film the altar — but its presence was truly the heart of the event. Guests were invited to contribute personal items or drawings, and the altar was filled with heartfelt tributes from the community.

🐅 A Celebration of Life at the Zoo
Blending the zoo’s natural setting with cultural celebration made for such a unique atmosphere. Families explored the Zoo Boo decorations while also pausing to reflect on how Día de los Muertos celebrates both memory and joy. It felt like the perfect mix of festivity and reflection — a celebration of life surrounded by nature.
